You have graduated high school or college and now youre ready for your first real job. Youve mailed out rsums and have been called in for your first interview. How can you do well at the interview so you wind up being offered the job?1. Dress professionally. No midriff shirts, low-cut blouses or flip-flops because youre going to work and not the beach. While its not necessary to buy a suit, it is particularly important to look professional. If youre trying to get a job in a conservative office such as an accounting firm, dont dress as if you were going to a concert. If you are applying for a retail position, you have a little more freedom. Rather than list what clothing is and is not acceptable, I would tell you to dress as if you were going to meet one of the most important people in your life- because you are!2. Make sure you are well-groomed. Dont look as though you just rolled out of bed and couldnt bother to take care of basic personal hygiene. Nothing will make the HR Manager bring the interview to a close faster than unwashed hair, dirty fingernails or body odor. As an employee, you will be a reflection of the company and no customer wants to do business with an unkempt person. 3. Be aware of your body language. A firm handshake at the start of the interview shows you are self-confident. Maintain eye contact, stay relaxed and be attentive to the interviewer. Ask questions and listen thoughtfully to the answers. Think before you answer questions from the interviewer- dont ramble and keep the conversation on the topic.4. Be prepared for the interview. Research the company beforehand- every business now has a website where you can learn what they do and who their customers are. This shows the interviewer you are interested in the job and took the initiative to find out all you could about the company. 5. Be present in the interview. Ive interviewed candidates who acted as if they were waiting for a bus. They didnt ask questions, but instead just listened to me, and I wasnt really sure if they were paying attention. Be enthusiastic, ask questions and participate in the interview. After listing all the duties required of the position, I asked one candidate if this sounded like something shed be interested in. Her reply was a quiet, I can do the job. She didnt answer my question, she seemed indifferent, and she didnt get the job. If you cant be excited in the interview, youre not going to be energized in the workplace either.First impressions count, and you want to let the interviewer know you want the job, are willing to work hard and will do your best. You might not necessarily be the most qualified candidate, but still land the job because you were the most outstanding one. Good luck!
Do you currently have the career of your dreams? If so, congratulations on all your hard work, because I'm quite sure that your success and accomplishment didn't happen over night. If you do not have the career you have always dreamed of, do not worry, you can get there. Career development isn't easy, but it is definitely worth it.Career development can mean a lot of things. Here, for my purposes, I simply mean doing the things you have to do to get the career you really want. The first step in the process of career development is to figure out - really figure out - the career you want to have. This may be harder than it seems. You really need to know yourself, know what you're good at, and know what excites you. Not many people last long in a career that they hate. Career development begins with taking a close look at yourself. See a career counselor for even more help or to take tests that will help you to determine your personality and jobs that will fit it well.Once you have determined a career or two that seems like it will fit you and your dreams, continue with your "career development" by discovering what needs to happen for you to be qualified for the career you want. Career development does not happen in an instant or even in a year, it may take years of hard work to get to where you want to be. It is important to be realistic about your goals and about the process. Does more education need to take place for your career development? Or perhaps you just need some special training courses in your field but you do not need another degree? Find these things out and then begin pursuing it.Career development is important because I am convinced that it is important that people spend their lives on things they care about and feel like they can do well at. There is nothing worse than spending years of your life in an unsatisfying career. Fortunately, you do not have to let that be the story of your life. Take proactive steps that put you in control of your career development.I guess what I'm simply trying to say is this: life is hard. Work is hard. Work is much easier and life is much better when it is doing a career that you love. Believe that it is possible for you to have a career that you love and then commit to whatever career development is necessary for you. It will be worth it for years to come.
If you are planning to spend money on diversity training, WAIT! You may be wasting your money if you havent done any foundation building. If diversity and inclusion are not first integrated into your business strategy, very little will change just by holding one or two day training classes. Organizations in all sectors make this mistake and dont realize it until it is too late. If you want to leverage the diversity you already have, increase the diversity of your organization, or prevent cultural misunderstandings you need to create a corporate culture that is inclusive at all levels, and in every system and process. You can get everyone trained by a great trainer, with a great program, but when people leave your organization they take what they learned with them (if they still remember it) and your organization remains the same. Further, reaching resisters and naysayers of diversity efforts is unlikely only with traininga more multi-faceted approach is needed to help these individuals see the value of diversity in their organizations and to bring a greater number of people on board to the initiative. Simma's Strategies for Creating an Inclusive Organization Here are some of the steps that need to be taken in order to create an inclusive organization. Start at the top. It must be championed and led by the CEO and other people in the executive team. Leadership of a diversity and inclusion initiative or culture change cannot be delegated. Other people can help drive it, but it must be viewed as coming from the top. That also means you need to start including it in conversations, discussions, newsletters and e-mail. Assess your organization with surveys, focus groups and interviews in order to identify strengths, challenges and areas for improvement as it relates to diversity, inclusion and employee satisfaction in specific areas. Create a cohesive vision and strategy that is agreed upon by members of the executive leadership team. Know where you are going. Engage all levels of senior management. They need to be part of the vision and have a clear understanding of concepts, roles, business case and benefits, in order to help lead the change. Develop a communication and information sharing strategy and process in order to share that vision throughout the organization. Send the message in such a way that you create middle manager and employee buy-in. Help them understand how the diversity and inclusion/culture change process will benefit them personally, professionally and as an organization, That will involve internal marketing at all levels. Use the results of the survey to address specific areas for improvement, most commonly; recruitment, interviewing, hiring, retention, promotion and performance evaluation. Examine your present organizational culture, and identify ways in which your organization can create a more inclusive environment. Define skills and behaviors that managers need in order to make the initiative/culture change a success and successfully lead a diverse workforce. Conduct training for all levels of your organization in areas related to diversity and inclusion. Set up a process for accountability at all levels, relating progress to compensation and evaluations. Measure results, create the buzz and make it exciting (if its not fun, it wont be done) The amount of time, order and the steps themselves depend on your organization and goals, but if you want to go beyond compliance, hear new ideas and best practices, reduce cultural misunderstanding and miscommunication, hire and retain the best of the best from everywhere, training alone wont do it. Before you spend your next dollar on diversity training, ask yourselves if you just want people to have a good day, learn and forget a few things or do you want ongoing change that will make you a benchmark organization and the employer of choice.
Why do we fall for these things time after time and why are some people getting rich from these schemes at the expense of broken dreams and life changing decisions for the worse? In the next several paragraphs I want to warn you about these so called part time jobs lies.First, before I lose people, there is such thing as a legitimate "part time jobs" but compared to the vast majority of these so call opportunities they are very few and rather far between. I mean sure there are people that because of the internet can carry on their job remotely from the location of their choice, but this is a far cry from the claims of many of these scams that offer you wads of cash for a couple hours of work per day and with no experience or training required. This is absolutely ridiculous if you think about it and that is the problem people would rather believe lies than face the cold hard truth that you have to work hard for a living.Second beware of multi level marketing claims. They will claim that they are not a pyramidal system, which is illegal, but they are for the most part. They will talk to you about passive income all from saving you and your friends lots of money on products that are available to you at reduced rates. They will guarantee you a certain level of income with a specific number of team members. They will give you a reasonable time period for which this can all be accomplished. Basically what they are doing is feeding you a lot of bull about their once in a lifetime part time jobs.Now I want to make it very clear that this is the vast majority, which means that there are legitimate chances to make a decent income while at home and on your own schedule but you must be ready to work hard and you have to be good at what ever you do. This will inevitably mean that there is a learning curve to any part time jobs, and that the rewards will increase according to the amount of effort that you expend. The saying good things are worth waiting for cant be more true than when applied to the legitimate chance to make an income in the comforts of your own home.
Are you dissatisfied with your job? Do you want to find a new one or at least make a move to another department within your company? Do you need certifications in MCSE, MCP and any of those other abbreviations? You need to sit down and decide what career path you wish to take if you want to go the Microsoft Certification route.First of all, do you have any prior experience in the business world? If so, no matter what you decide to do, whether it is MCSE training or MCP training or anything else, you will be ahead of others with no prior professional expertise. However, if you choose to make a career change that is a complete 180 degrees from what you are doing now, you will have some trouble finding gainful employment without some concrete experience.For instance, if you are an Administrative Assistant and decide to go for a Microsoft Certified System Engineer, better known as an MCSE, you need to have some practical experience (the basic requirement is about a year of previous experience) under your belt before even starting your MCSE training. How could you go about doing that? You have several options. Find a mentor. Maybe another person within your company who has an MCSE could give you pointers and some on-site knowledge into his job. Volunteering through a nonprofit or some other community organization could net you some valuable experience. Serving as an intern, whether paid or unpaid, is another option.A volunteer position or an internship also is beneficial for those people with a fresh Microsoft certification but no practical, hands-on experience. Practically every nonprofit organization or community group has computers. Some of them are small groups and others have computer labs (perhaps state-run job placement places) with no budget to hire full-time staff. You have got to think outside the box for ways to gain that practical experience.Networking mixers or social time is another great idea. You can mingle with professionals in the field you are trying to break into and find out about their internship opportunities. It is the perfect venue in which to sell or market yourself. Check out your local Chamber of Commerce for any local trade organizations in the prospective field as a starting point in this networking endeavor. Many times, you can find out some priceless information about the ins and outs of your potential area of certification. Learning from the experts could be an eye opening experience for you. Heck, you could even change your mind from braving those MCSE boot camps and the seven tests for MCSE exams. Isnt it better to gain that insight before you spend the time and money?Once you have completed your certification, whether it is navigating through MCP courses or any other Microsoft certification, be prepared to start from scratch in your new endeavor. Just remember, anything having to do with technology will change again in a year or two, so you have to keep up with new trends and that means continued instruction. As long as you travel the Microsoft route, youll be successful.
